Space Jam 2 Is Officially Happening - Againby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

There are a number of movies which seem to flip-flop in and out of ‘development hell’ so much that it’s often unclear as to whether or not they will ever be made. While plenty of movies which have been sitting on the back-burner for years have been successful in their endeavors to finally reach the big screen, many more sadly fizzle out. For fans of the 1996 cartoon-live-action-basketball hybrid Space Jam, dreams of seeing a sequel to the cult movie were fading fast – particularly as news was fizzling in and out on a sporadic basis over the past few years. Whether or not you feel a Space Jam sequel is necessary – or even wanted – it looks like the project has been finally greenlit for production on behalf of Springhill Entertainment.

As previous news regarding Space Jam 2 has professed, LeBron James will be stepping in as the central basketball star to team up alongside Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in all-new ball-dribbling antics in the near future. The original movie, which starred Michael Jordan and Bill Murray alongside a cast of recognizable Looney Tunes characters, was released in 1996 – which means we may be looking at a 25-year gap between original and sequel, likely to enter into the record books in one form or another. James’ Springhill Entertainment announced that Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) has been selected as producer for the project, while Terence Nance will be on board to direct. James is reported to have loved Coogler’s work with Black Panther and is excited to translate his talents to a children’s movie.

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” James advised in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams.”

Space Jam 2 has been something of a legend in the making for a few years now, but it seems that James and his production company are keen to get started on the project as of the 2019 NBA off-season. This could mean we see a movie as early as 2020/2021 – will it escape the curse of development hell which has swallowed up so many other big movies over the years?
