One of the highest profile Hollywood stories to break this summer revolved around Disney and its Marvel wing. The firm, who have had an incredible year at the international box office thanks to the likes of Infinity War and Black Panther – came under scrutiny earlier this year as a result of a decision to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn over historic tweets which were considered inappropriate in line with Disney’s family-friendly image. Many spoke out against the decision to fire Gunn, including the main stars of the Guardians series, particularly Dave Bautista. In the time since Gunn’s firing, it’s thought that the projected Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has been put on hold – and with Marvel in full flow considering both Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 are just around the corner, it seems that Star-Lord, Rocket and co will have to wait for another adventure of their own for now.

However, if various reports are to be believed, Gunn may have pulled off a considerable career coup – and so may have DC and Warner Bros. The DC cinematic universe has been struggling to keep pace with Marvel in recent years, and while their 2016 movie Suicide Squad may have pulled in the box office dollars, it certainly didn’t fare too well critically. However, a sequel is reported to be going ahead (with some hearing that it may actually be a reboot) – and there are strong suggestions that Gunn is in line to write the script. Could this be an ace in the hole for DC against Marvel on the big screen? Rumors are also circulating that he could be in line to direct the movie – however it may appear.

DC’s ongoing skirmish against Marvel in the box office stakes is well-documented. While they have earned considerable numbers in terms of ticket sales, they have failed to keep the lasting momentum that Marvel seems to maintain with almost every picture they release. DC’s finest hour in recent years, it appears, has been Wonder Woman – and with a sequel to the movie appearing soon, after Aquaman hits theaters in the near future, it seems that the DC train is still very much ongoing. Rumors of a complete reboot to the Justice League in general are also rife – and if James Gunn is on board, the potential to claw back some cred from Marvel could be huge.
