Long-running British sci-fi TV show Doctor Who underwent a colossal overhaul this year, as Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to play the time-travelling Gallifreyan in the show’s 55 year history. Further changes came into play too when Chris Chibnall took over from Steven Moffatt after the latter had held the position of showrunner since 2010. Chibnall, like Moffatt, had previously written a number of episodes of the show, and is perhaps best known otherwise for being the main brains behind hit British TV murder mystery series Broadchurch. Despite these recent changes, however, inside gossip appears to be suggesting that both the Doctor and the showrunner will be changing once again after season 12.
According to DoctorWhoTV, perhaps the most prominent fan site for the show online, sci-fi magazine Starburst appears to have inside knowledge on what will be happening with the show in years to come. The magazine claims that a BBC source has revealed Chibnall will be set to move on from the show after season 12, which is supposedly slated to air in 2019. “We can only speculate as to his possible reasons – if indeed the story is true – but Chibnall told us quite firmly in January 2013 that he didn’t want the showrunner job,” Starburst reports. “It’s possible after the success of Broadchurch that the BBC pursued him for it against his better wishes. Or simply that he changed his mind.”
The report in Starburst magazine suggests that Chibnall may not be happy with the way things are being run behind the camera, and that as a result, he could exit as quickly as two years into his run. Whittaker, who has previously worked with Chibnall on Broadchurch, is also alleged to have suggested that she would not – according to Starburst – ‘want to continue on as the Doctor without (him)’.

These rumors are starting circulate around various media outlets such as the NME, and while they should not be taken at face value at this time, there has yet to be an official response from the BBC with regard to the report. With the rumors having surfaced on DoctorWhoTV as of November 18th, it’s not clear what direction the broadcaster’s silence should be taken in. In any case, as with all rumors emanating online, don’t buy into anything just yet – and stick with One News Page for the facts!
