When Will Patrick Stewart's New Star Trek Series Be Airing?by 👩‍💻 Alice Monroe

One of the most surprising and welcome pieces of TV news from earlier this year came with the announcement that Patrick Stewart, perhaps still best known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, will be returning to the brand for a completely new series in the near future. The news comes over a decade after Stewart had last played Picard on-screen, though the actor has remained highly prolific across stage and TV ever since. With Star Trek Discovery already set to return in early 2019, fans are chomping at the bit to learn more about quite when Picard will make his return – and how.

It has already been established that the character will not be appearing as part of Discovery – instead, in his own series, which will take place considerable years after the end of The Next Generation. News on the project has remained incredibly slow to drip through, indicating that there is clearly an effort to protect as much of the new show from leaks and spoilers as possible. At this point in time, we do not even know what the new series will be called – but reports appear to indicate that we do now know roughly when we can expect it to appear on our screens.

According to Digital Spy, CBS All Access head David Nevins spoke about the future of Star Trek on the network and was more candid than usual with regard to Picard’s forthcoming return. It’s thought that not only will we be getting two new series of Star Trek in 2019, we will also be getting a few extra stories wedged in between – and that Picard’s series looks set to beam down by the end of the year.

“Star Trek Discovery season two is in a great place – and there is huge anticipation for Picard. That will (premiere) at the end of the year. And we’re doing these Star Trek short films in between.”

It’s previously been noted that Stewart’s new series will look and feel considerably different to other Star Trek staples that have come before it – and that, as of now, no other returning characters from The Next Generation have been confirmed to appear. With production thought to be underway, fans are seriously hoping for news soon as the New Year approaches – as always, let’s wait and see!
