The most recent season of British TV sci-fi staple Doctor Who has been remarkable for a number of ways. Not only has it reportedly been recording significant viewing figures as high as those last experienced around ten years ago, it has been the first full series with the main character of the Doctor being portrayed as a female. The central time lord, who has traditionally been male, is a time-travelling alien from the planet Gallifrey who can change form at the point of imminent death – and for the first time in the show’s history, the character transformed into a woman in late 2017.

The woman behind the character for season 11 has been Jodie Whittaker, whose performance as the first female Doctor has been met with almost universal acclaim. Whittaker joined the show following the departure of Peter Capaldi in 2017, joining previous collaborator Chris Chibnall, who joined the show as its most prolific writer and showrunner. Recent rumors suggested that Whittaker and Chibnall would be exiting the programme following claims of the latter supposedly looking to jump ship after season 12 – though recent news appears to suggest that both showrunner and star will be sticking around for some time yet.

“As Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends have been winning the hearts of families across the nation this autumn, we’ve been busy with a whole new set of action-packed adventures for the 13th Doctor,” Chibnall announced recently. It was confirmed that Whittaker and the team would be returning for season 12 as of 2020, which means that – following the forthcoming New Year special, fans will need to wait over a year to see more stories on the small screen, according to BBC News.

While the new season of Doctor Who and changes made throughout have been met with praise from various quarters, some fans have aired concerns over Chibnall’s writing on a number of episodes aired this year. Others have been concerned that a lack of a major story arc may have undone some of the show’s appeal. However, Whittaker appears to be going from strength to strength – and while this news neither confirms nor denies what the team are planning for after season 12, it does mean that we have at least another year of adventures with the 13th Doctor lined up at the dawn of the 20s.
