Our Five Most Disappointing Movies of 2018

Our Five Most Disappointing Movies of 2018by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

It’s been a very vivid year for film – mainly on the positive side. 2018 has been a year where we’ve been seriously spoilt for choice in terms of fantastic blockbusters, intriguing new angles and genuinely surprising moments across a variety of genres. Alongside our traditional rundown of the ten best movies we’ve reviewed this year, we do – as always – have our pick of what we feel have been the most disappointing.

This year, we’ve been lucky enough to have been treated mainly to movies which are brilliant at best and mediocre at worst – which is why this year’s ‘worst of’ is more a glance at some of the most disappointing 2018 has had to offer. All of the five movies below have hit hard in terms of being let downs, at least for us here at One News Page. Without further ado, set aside your expectations and take a very deep breath – these are amongst 2018’s biggest disappointments.

A very famous book indeed – that failed to translate well to the big screen. While many people will take plenty away from this with mesmerising visuals and capable cast, it’s all sold to us in such a smug, overly-convoluted fashion. It’s ultimately extremely unmemorable – which is a huge shame considering its source material. This is a movie which wants you to know how important it is, and chuckles at you for not keeping up. It bombed.

Yes – our opinions on Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic certainly didn’t go with the critical flow. Technically interesting, and perhaps challenging in many areas, First Man commits the mother of all cinematic sins buy simply being boring. What’s here isn’t technically terrible compared with 2018’s worst – but how do you make such an anticipated movie about a national hero so unremarkable?

This one has rubbed off negatively on many Harry Potter fans, and, sadly, for good reason. Fantastic Beasts 2 may have the visual flair and technical capability of the original – one of the best movies of 2016 – but it suffers when it comes to actually throwing anything tangible at the audience in terms of plot. Grindelwald is a movie which knowingly plods along towards a final twist which doesn’t even make sense in the wider context of JK Rowling’s books. Utterly unremarkable.

This movie has one joke – puppets doing obscene and ‘edgy’ stuff. It’s a joke that’s executed without a lick of timing or charm, and is repeated over and over and over again. The puppet tech is – of course – fantastic. Sadly, everything else lingers on banal, bordering on utterly pointless. Its focus on one joke wouldn’t be so bad if the movie wasn’t so completely and utterly boring!

And here we are – our pick for 2018’s worst movie – and one which appears to have split critics right down the middle. In a year where the majority of disappointing films have largely been technically good, but hollow otherwise, Downsizing is a movie which takes a superb premise and flushes it down the toilet in some of the most mind-numbing ways possible – around the second act. There’s much more detail in our review, and far more than we have space to say here – but Downsizing is a movie which deserves severe reprimand for shamelessly wasting a creative premise and cast in favour of senselessly sewing in some of the most sledgehammer-intensive socio-political commentary you will ever see put to film. There are Michael Moore movies with less of an agenda.

So – if you’d like to take a look back at 2018 in film – we wholeheartedly recommend that you avoid the above at all costs!
