The Muppets are undoubtedly some of the most enduring TV and film characters in US history. The brainchild of puppet master Jim Henson, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and co have been gracing our screens for decades with wacky, irreverent antics. Following two big-screen outings in the form of The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted a few years ago – along with a since-cancelled mockumentary show – it seems that Disney are keen to really make the most of their acquired franchise.
According to Empire, Disney are heading back to the drawing board to try and put together a new series for their upcoming TV streaming service, Disney+. Disney+ is rising up as a result of the brand’s successful acquisition of 20th Century Fox last year – and it looks set to play host to a whole plethora of big name characters and brands. Cross-referencing Splash Report, Empire states that Josh Gad (Frozen, Beauty and The Beast) is working with Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (Once Upon a Time) to put together a new series that can bring the Muppets back into the public consciousness.
Disney+ Reportedly Developing Another 'Muppets' Reboot [video]
Following a series of super-successful live shows, Disney is keen to make the brand work, having seemingly struggled to find their footing with the characters since their movie re-emergence earlier this decade. At the time of writing, there is no news yet from either Disney or the Muppets brand regarding whether or not Animal, Gonzo, Bunsen and Beaker will be bringing their unique brand of madcap mayhem to the small screen once again – but it’s thought that they may be working to a concept set after the popular 1984 movie The Muppets Take Manhattan.
Rumors abound that it’ll be another reboot for the characters, with the gang supposedly disbanded and coming back together to look for missing friend Rowlf, the piano-playing canine. Sources suggest we could be seeing Muppet action back on our screens in 2020, though, as usual, we’ll need to tread carefully with such rumors.
Despite reboots and re-imaginings over the years, the Muppets remain some of the most popular characters in US pop culture. To this end, it’ll be very interesting to see what, if anything, Disney has in store for the crew in the years to come. Will it be a new variety show, or a rumored adventure? Let’s wait and see.
