Disney has continued to ride the crest of a critical wave with their most recent animated output, with movies from Tangled all the way to 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet having been hugely well-received by fans and critics alike. One of the biggest landmark moments for Disney’s animation division, however, was the release of Frozen in 2013, which has gone on to break all manner of animated box office records. In many cases, a great box office performance would generally inspire a sequel. Disney, however, hadn’t released a direct sequel to any of its animated canon since 1990 with The Rescuers Down Under.
That, however, all changed with last year’s direct sequel to Wreck-It Ralph, and it appears Disney is getting back on the Frozen train by bringing moviegoers back to the land of Arendelle. The first official trailer for Frozen 2 has landed, and while it may not offer too much in the way of plot spoilers, it at least does plenty to whet the appetite for some spectacular, snowy animation.
The teaser trailer wastes no time in showing off Elsa’s freezing powers once again, with the Queen sliding over icy waves in what appears to be promising a bigger, grander adventure than many had been anticipating. Idina Menzel will return as the voice of Elsa for the sequel, while Kristen Bell, Jonathan Gross, Josh Gad and Santino Fontana will return as Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Hans respectively.
Frozen 2 - Official Teaser Trailer (Walt Disney Animation Studios)
Having earned $1.2 billion worldwide, the first Frozen movie is seen as the apex of what many critics have called Disney’s ‘second renaissance’. The songs from the movie – particularly Elsa’s solo number ‘Let It Go’ – continue to reverberate with young viewers and families all over the world. As such, a sequel was probably inevitable – but will it follow Ralph’s lead and continue a new trend for successful Disney sequels at the box office?
The teaser trailer for Frozen 2 may not be giving too much away right now, but what it is doing is building hype – and with much of the original team from the first movie on board again, it will remain to be seen whether or not the same magic can catch fire – or freeze over – a second time, six years on. Frozen 2 heads to theaters across the US as of November 22, 2019 – better get yourself familiar with those songs again!
