Ready or not, the holiday season is coming, and with it are some genuinely huge movies – while the majority of big films are reserved for the summer months, there is always going to be a market for family releases and franchises in the run up to Thanksgiving and Christmas. In case you were in doubt, here’s our quick glance at six movies that we will be casting our eyes over in the final quarter of 2016.

ROGUE ONE : A STAR WARS STORY

All eyes are on Disney’s second foray into the Star Wars universe. The Force Awakens was a colossal financial and critical success in December 2015, and the studio is again hoping to capitalize on holiday interest as we are given an insight into what exactly happened before the events of A New Hope. Trailers are getting positive reviews thus far, which can only bode well for a franchise that is only looking to get bigger still.

ASSASSIN’S CREED

The hugely popular (and seemingly never-ending) videogame franchise centering around European revolution is set to get a movie adaptation at the very back end of the year – and while videogame adaptations don’t necessarily fare well on screen (Angry Birds more or less holds the accolade of being the most critically successful in recent years), the big screen version is set to benefit from Hollywood royalty in the form of the fantastic Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard – meaning that we may be in for something of a surprise.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Another Marvel movie? Why not! This one is just around the corner – with the able Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, the latest addition to Marvel’s cinematic universe promises to be visually stunning as well as being completely left-field to anything we’ve seen from the comic book universe so far. The trailers have enticed, and we feel this will be a very big hitter.

INFERNO

Tom Hanks is back as Robert Langdon in a Dan Brown adaptation that promises to deal with the very fate of the world itself – this is another movie that is just around the corner and it promises to deliver plenty to fans of Hanks’ previous exploits as the code-busting symbologist. We all love a conspiracy theory – and Inferno looks set to unravel mysteries and hidden agendas galore later this fall.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

One of the most talked-about movies of the year, and still one of the most mysterious – J K Rowling believes that there will be another four movies accompanying this journey back into the world of wizarding, with the celebrated Eddie Redmayne at the helm and a whole ton of unseen Harry Potter lore set to spill out across the big screen in the months to come. Will the movie add to this year’s Pottermania?

MOANA

Disney have had a superb year at the box office, and animation fans really get a treat with not one but two animated movies in 2016 (Pixar’s Finding Dory aside). Moana tells the tale of a Polynesian girl on the adventure of a lifetime – enlisting the help of a demigod as she traverses the ocean waves in a bid to save her people from imminent disaster. It promises to be a classic Disney adventure epic that provides a nice contrast to Zootopia, which has recently found its way to home release.
