Our Spidey Senses Are Tingling - There's a Movie Spin-Off On The Wayby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

If there’s a hero that has really been through the Hollywood adaptation mill over the past few years, it’s Spider-Man. In the space of fifteen years he’s been portrayed in six different movies – five of his own, with a cameo in Captain America: Civil War – and he’s set to debut in his first movie as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man : Homecoming later this year. He’ll be played by Tom Holland, who takes over the role from Hacksaw Ridge’s Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire (who famously kicked things off with the original cult trilogy). It certainly seems that there have been multiple attempts to get Spidey right – and fans are hoping Holland’s first full turn as the webslinger will be his best ever.

But let’s put that on the back burner for now. One of the best things about the Spider-Man comics and mythos is the villains. From Doc Octopus to The Lizard, and from Green Goblin to Sandman, there seems to be a real trend for genuinely interesting baddies in Spidey’s life – and one of his most enduring foes, the nightmarish, foot-long-tongued Venom, seems set to get his own adventure next year. The news that the movie has been pushed back to fall 2018 will surprise just as many as those who didn’t know such a project was in existence!

Venom is arguably Spider-Man’s most recognizable and perhaps most sinister foe, an alien being that takes over bodies to thrive anew – yet his upcoming movie doesn’t yet seem to have much in the way of details attached. Sony Pictures are helming production, and script-writing took place during 2016 – and it appears that, despite a lack of press details or pre-promotional material, the provisional date of October 2018 has been earmarked in the calendar. If part of the Marvel Universe, it will give us an opportunity to see a villain story for the first time – but it may be a story that is a standalone treat in the same vein as the groundbreaking Deadpool. Who’s to say?

Comic book movies are still huge business and it is no surprise that there are movements to try and shake up proceedings a little. There’s no doubt that feelings over Venom getting his own movie will be mixed – but if this is an indication of the road down which our comic book movies are travelling, we are all for it – bring on the variety, and the bad guys!
