Anyone who has watched more than their fair share of Marvel movies will already know that Stan Lee – creator of Spider-Man and countless other heroes as well as being one of the grandmasters of the brand – has continued to spring up when you least expect him in the background of each of the movies in the expanded cinematic universe. For example, he delivered a parcel to Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War and was seen enjoying a book on public transport during one of Doctor Strange’s fantastic world-bending sequences. Up until now, it was thought that Lee was simply popping up for the fun of it – but recent revelations may establish that he has a wider role in the Marvel universe than we may have previously thought.
Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lie ahead!
Lee’s most recent cameo, of course, takes place in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – and in this particular appearance, he directly references having worked as a Fed-Ex operative, the cameo he made in Civil War – further igniting the fan theory that all of his appearances are linked, and that he has essentially been playing the same character across all the films we’ve seen him pop up in so far. It’s an intriguing thought, certainly – and it’s become all the more exciting as it seems that Marvel’s CEO, Kevin Feige, appears to be supportive of the idea.
Feige advised recently to media outlets that the idea that Lee’s character – essentially himself – is popping up in various bizarre places across the Marvel landscape would be a fun one, and that the idea he reference Civil War’s cameo was developed quite late into proceedings. Therefore, it appears that Lee is now, canonically, playing a character – one who just so happens to find himself in a series of extraordinary circumstances while the whole universe is often at stake. Whether or not his character has depth beyond his series of fun cameos – those of which he has filmed for the next three movies – remains to be seen.
For now, however, whether he’s chuckling on a bus or delivering a parcel to ‘Tony Stank’, his appearances are always worth looking for – adding to the layer of fun that Marvel always effortlessly seems to introduce alongside spectacular visuals and intriguing character stories. Where will he pop up next? Let’s watch the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming and find out!
