How To Avoid Spoilers - A Really Quick Guideby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Unless you’re the sort of person who has very little access to TV or the internet, you may be aware that something called ‘Game of Thrones’ returned this past week. Nothing short of a phenomenon, the show is famously followed by fervent fans – and, as such, for those people waiting to catch up on certain episodes, it can be extremely hard to browse the internet without someone spoiling all the best bits before you’ve seen them. While the media has generally cottoned on to the idea of ‘spoiler-free’ news, it remains to be said that there are still some outlets offering big secrets out – and, worse than that, there’s friends on your Twitter and Facebook who are just as likely to blurt out the bits you want to be surprised about.

So – the burning question is – how do you avoid spoilers in a day and age where we’re always connected, all of the time? Falling in line with One News Page’s recent announcement that we are to operate a ‘spoiler-aware’ policy in line with the return of Game of Thrones to HBO, here’s a few ways you can go about avoiding those pesky unwanted revelations until you’re all caught up:

The GameofSpoils Chrome Add-On
Using Google Chrome? Avoiding Thrones spoilers? This extension will help you out – we’ve covered Chrome add-ons to combat spoilers before, and if you’re browsing via desktop, this nifty gizmo will filter out all keywords specifically related to the series – so you’ll be shielded from any spoilers that emerge. Add GameofSpoils to your browser here.

Social Fixer
If Facebook is proving to be a stomping ground for spoilers, you don’t have to unfollow people – as Social Fixer will provide you with ample options to filter out words and phrases you don’t want to see. You can download it from the program’s official site here. This also works especially well if you can’t stand political chat on your news feed!

Twitter Muting
What’s even simpler over on Twitter is the muting function, which allows you to cancel out certain hashtags and phrases as you see fit. You can find these setting under Setting and privacy and Muted words – and through the official apps, you may be able to find the feature simply through the Settings tab.

Go Outside
Why not take some time away from your devices and enjoy the fresh air? This is probably the hardest option for those of us glued to our phones and gadgets – but it’s the best way to get away from spoiler talk...
