Big Name Franchises Heading For The Switch - Are Third Parties Finally Flocking To Nintendo?by

The Nintendo Switch has arguably been one of the huge success stories of 2017 on the tech front – it’s officially the firm’s fastest-selling console ever – statistics that really aren’t bad for a company that’s been producing home video consoles for over thirty years. While it has arguably taken some time for the Switch to gather a stack of titles well worth playing – big games such as Splatoon 2, Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Arms, Sonic Mania and more have really filled out the games roster. With big games on the horizon from Nintendo themselves in the form of Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid Prime 4, the future looks blindingly bright for the Japanese giant – but the most interesting developments are those taking place in the third party market.

Big third party developers have made moves towards the Switch in recent months – Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U, was reportedly notoriously difficult to develop for – but a few surprise announcements for the handheld-console hybrid have been met with elation from fans and current gamers. Rockstar – responsible for the colossally popular Grand Theft Auto series – is set to port an HD rerelease of LA Noire to the system – alongside releases for Xbox One and Playstation 4 in the weeks to come. Beyond this, re-imaginings and ports of classic games such as Doom and Worms (specifically Worms WMD) are on their way – as is the surprise announcement of Wolfenstein II, a title which may be of some contrast to the family-orientated catalogue Nintendo has led with in the past.

Beyond this, Switch players will be able to get their hands on Rocket League – the hugely popular motor-racing-soccer hybrid that took PC gamers by storm – later this year. Switch fans are still waiting, too, for the port of Skyrim which has been heralded since the line-up for the console was first announced – a hugely popular open-world adventure game which could be incredible on the go.

All things considered – does this mean that third party support may finally be back on the menu for Nintendo? While many fans may still be pining for Virtual Console to make its way to the system, there are legions of popular third party surprises on their way.
