In the start to the awards season which will ultimately culminate in the Academy Awards early next year, the Golden Globes nominations are already rolling in – with seminal films such as The Shape of Water and The Post from this year’s cinema offerings having garnered many nods already ▶ – though one film in particular which is earning attention in the nominations has a rather special reason for doing so. The movie in question is All The Money In The World, Ridley Scott’s account of the Getty kidnapping – and if you’ve been paying attention to the news in recent weeks, you may well recognize some of these details.
The movie was set to star Kevin Spacey as the main lead – John Paul Getty – though a series of controversial revelations in recent weeks led to the complete removal of Spacey from the film entirely. The movie was virtually completed – but in light of the actor having been accused of sexual misconduct dating back years, veteran star Christopher Plummer was drafted in to replace him ▶ – effectively re-filming all of his lines from scratch in an effort to wipe the slate clean. What is particularly astonishing about this case is, from the look of things, Plummer has been able to secure his own nomination for his part despite not having been earmarked for the role in the first place.
Plummer is nominated as Best Actor for his part in the movie, with awards set to be handed out in January. Other nominees for big awards include Gary Oldman, who will be portraying Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour, along with Helen Mirren, Judi Dench and Daniel Day Lewis, who are all in the running for movie acting awards. Several well-known stars are also in the line for awards having taken part in limited series for TV – including Robert De Niro, Geoffrey Rush, Nicole Kidman, Kyle MacLachlan, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law and Reese Witherspoon.

Spacey’s removal from the movie is just one fall-out from the scandal surrounding his interactions with several people going back years – with popular Netflix show House of Cards having announced that they will continue their final season without their main star. This is in line with Netflix advising that they would not continue to host the show should Spacey remain. Allegations against the actor remain – and it is not clear what action, if any, will be taken.
