The Harvey Weinstein scandal is one which has rocked Hollywood – and the world at large – to its core. The former movie boss stands accused of inappropriate conduct and harassment by several high profile and budding women in the film industry, allegations which forced the mogul to effectively ‘take a break’ after his expulsion from his own company and the reported breakdown of his relationship. Allegations against Weinstein are now so widely spread that there are multiple investigations taking place into crimes he is alleged to have committed. Further to this, more and more people have been speaking out against alleged harassment and abuse taking place behind the scenes in Hollywood and beyond – with big names such as Kevin Spacey and Louis CK having been named as some of those who have allegedly been inappropriate with numerous people over the years. Both CK and Spacey have found themselves removed from various projects and a number of their contracts torn up – while investigations continue. This chain reaction has inspired more and more people to step forward about such conduct – and a new website has been set up to offer something of an overview as to how far the rabbit hole can go.
Rotten Apples is a website that has been set up recently to enable visitors to look up any big movie or TV series and to see if there are any personnel involved who have been accused of sexual misconduct. The site will deliver results of anyone in the production – front of the camera or otherwise – who has been accused of such misconduct – and users will be able to click on a name to be directed to news sources which stand as verifiable. You may find that many movies and TV shows bear a host of names facing such allegations – particularly as the stories surrounding sexual misconduct in Hollywood appear to be ramping up on a regular basis.
Rotten Apples may not put all off watching their favorite movies and shows – however, what it will do is show just how far spread the problems that men and women behind the scenes are facing. The Weinstein scandal, while shocking, is proving to be one of the year’s most important turning points, particularly as it is helping those suffering in silence to finally open up about some of the awful incidents that are occurring behind closed doors.
