Justice League, Justice League, Justice League – set up to be the knight in shining armor for the DC cinematic universe, director Zack Snyder really put his all into a project which was set to wipe away bad memories of the tiresome Batman V Superman and the critically derided Suicide Squad – however, it did little other than offer mild distraction at a time when faith in the DC brand was middling at best. Wonder Woman – a fantastic superhero origin movie and the first to star and be directed by women, did the job far better and should rightly slot in as one of the best movies of the year. Justice League (read our comprehensive movie review here), sadly, cannot be considered DC’s ‘Avengers’ at this stage – they still need to find that magic formula – but it can at least hold its head high with a record that’s all its own – a rather dubious honor at best, mind.
Despite the oxymoron, Justice League is officially the best-selling box office bomb ever. This means that while the movie made an impressive amount of money at theaters worldwide (just over $615 million globally), it still hasn’t been enough to make back budget and marketing. There is still a chance that the movie could break even once home sales get taken into account – providing fans pick up the blu-ray and the digital download in droves – but for now, at least, it seems that the all-star superhero movie could hold the accolade for an ‘official’ box office bomb that performed the best in theaters worldwide.

Justice League never looked set to be much of a box office winner – sadly – as it posted a relatively meagre $93.8 million debut – the lowest that the DC universe has seen so far. Does mean that the hype train had finally veered off the rails? Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman were both among some of 2016’s biggest-sellers, and this can largely be attributed to incredible marketing and what some may argue to be morbid curiosity. While Marvel can only go from strength to strength, DC seems to still be looking for that golden opportunity to pull in the fans and the critics – and if the success of the summer is anything to go by, don’t be surprised if we see an awful lot more of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in the years to come.
