You can hardly fault Disney and Marvel for really pushing the boat out when it comes to making the most of their existing properties – after all, the Marvel cinematic universe has already set plenty of blueprints for other big studios to tie together various characters and films in a unique and interesting way. While it may work in some quarters, other studios such as Universal have struggled to get started with their own multi-character movie patchworks – meaning that eyes still very much fall to Marvel when it comes to ‘showing us all how it’s done’. With the majority of big characters in the Marvel Universe set to collide in this summer’s Avengers Infinity War, many have considered quite which direction the brand will move in next – and the answer very much seems to be keep spinning things off!
The latest character to get a spin-off is one who has been around for some time – Black Widow, the Russian female super-spy who has been integral to the Avengers line-up from the word go. News that Black Widow will be getting a writer is very good news indeed – as it means that Marvel will effectively have their very own first female-led superhero picture to effectively compare against the likes of DC’s Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman has been a shining beacon, critically, for DC thus far – meaning it’s very likely Marvel will want to replicate such success with their own fantastic female lead in Scarlett Johansson.

‘Very early development’ are the words being passed around right now – meaning that it may not be until 2020 at the earliest before we see exactly what Black Widow can bring to her own adventure. Will it be a prequel to her Avengers exploits – or will it pick up after the fallout of Infinity War? Let’s wait and see – but some are already proposing that such a movie could become an integral part of the brand’s Phase 4, which boots up shortly after Black Panther and Infinity War. With huge changes allegedly set to rain down in the latest Avengers movie, it looks set to be a very exciting few years indeed for Marvel maniacs.
Black Widow has, for some time, remained one of the least-developed characters in the Avengers squad despite her strong presence – meaning that it is perhaps about time that we get to learn a little bit more about her!
