Why Were These Big Names Omitted From the Oscars 'In Memoriam' Segment?

Why Were These Big Names Omitted From the Oscars 'In Memoriam' Segment?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Over the last few years, we have lost a huge number of big stars – far too many to list from 2016 and 2017 alone – and the Academy Awards is normally a good place to remember those who have passed away in the year before the most recent ceremony. Sometimes, it can be difficult to pay tribute to everyone in the film industry who may have sadly left us within the year – but it seems that Twitter in particular wasn’t too happy about a number of big omissions.

Adam West was perhaps the most conspicuously absent from the memoriam reel, with several fans on social media voicing their shock that the iconic Batman actor hadn’t been honored. While the Academy has yet to respond to certain media requests for comment on why certain names weren’t included, some claim that West was perhaps best known for his TV work, explaining his exclusion – however, he was also a screen actor on occasion.

The original Batman wasn’t the only big name to have found themselves missing from the memory reel. Stars such as Dorothy Malone, John Mahoney, Della Reese and Miguel Ferrer were absent from the piece – according to Entertainment.ie – as was Tobe Hooper, the celebrated director who brought iconic horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to the big screen. Quite why certain names have been omitted from the memory reel remains to be explained – though some have theorized that it is likely due to only a select number of names being able to ‘make the cut’. Regardless, it is sad that some names were not given the limelight that they deserved.

Actor David Ogden Stiers – who passed away just days before the ceremony – was also absent from the cut – though he may hopefully make the reel for the 91st Academy Awards next year. The actor was best known for his recurring appearances on TV’s M*A*S*H* and as a voice actor on several Disney productions (perhaps best known as Cogsworth from 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, itself an Oscar staple).

It can be hard to try and pay tribute to all the stars we lose from year to year – but for many, Adam West in particular was too iconic a name to omit. Media outlets have approached the Academy for comment and, at the time of writing, an answer is yet to appear.
