Baywatch Wins a Razzie Award – And Dwayne Johnson Is Delighted to Acceptby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

The ‘Razzie’ or Golden Raspberry Awards run alongside the Academy Awards each year to celebrate the absolute worst that cinema has had to offer in the past year. While the Oscars will obviously be an occasion for stars to thank the people around them for all their support and kindness, it’s extremely rare for anyone to actively acknowledge their receipt of a Razzie – though Oscar winner Halle Berry is one of a handful who has appeared in person to accept their award, with the star acknowledging her role in the ill-fated Catwoman with humility.

The Razzies have rolled around again, and this year, it seems that both Fifty Shades Freed and The Emoji Movie have made the biggest waves, with the movies picking up Worst Remake, Sequel or Spin-off and Worst Picture, respectively – though Emoji Movie also managed to make away with three more awards to its detriment.

A new award that was unveiled this year was The Razzie Nominee So Rotten You Loved It trophy, offered to a picture which could be deemed so bad, it’s good – consider Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, for example. This year, the maiden recipient is the critically mauled relaunch of Baywatch – and star Dwayne Johnson was only too humble about the win on social media.

“I was just informed that I too am bringing home the gold tonight – no, not an Oscar – maybe one day – but a Razzie,” the actor declared. “We made Baywatch with the best of intentions, it didn’t work out like that, but I humbly and graciously accept my Razzie. And I thank you critics, and I thank you fans.” As stated, Johnson is not trey first star or crew member to publicly acknowledge a Razzie – and he’s taken receipt of this particular award with a particularly humble analysis.

“Here’s the cool thing – the movie was so bad that they actually had to create another category. The new category is a movie so rotten you eventually fell in love with it. I’m not kidding! Which means the s**t sandwich you’ve been eating is so bad that you eventually started to like it.”

Some have been concerned over the years that the Razzie awards are perhaps a touch too cynical – however, they continue to give millions of moviegoers closure on some of the biggest flops, duds and misfires that have made their way to the big screen over the course of a year. Who’s to say what will scrape the bottom of the barrel for next year’s awards? Stay tuned!
