National Geographic Confronts Decades of Racist BehaviorWhen National Geographic decided to make their entire April issue about the subject of race, the magazine said it needed to examine its own history covering the topic and the ways it fell short, according to National Public Radio. Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg asked John Edwin Mason, a professor of African history and the history of photography at the University of Virginia, to examine the magazine's 130-year archive and then report back with his findings. Mason found examples of a long-embedded use of racism in the magazine's coverage through its writing, choice of subjects, and in its famous photography.
