Red Cross Reveals Nurse Has Been Held In Syria For More Than Five YearsThe Red Cross issued a public plea on Monday for the safe return of a New Zealand nurse who was captured by the Islamic State in Syria more than five years ago, according to USA Today. Louisa Akavi, 62, was working for the organization when she was captured in Syria in 2013. The Red Cross said it has known Akavi was kidnapped by armed gunmen, but determined it would not be safe to make that story public. Red Cross New Zealand secretary general Niamh Lawless said the assessment was made by the International Red Cross after the Islamic State's caliphate fell, now was the right time to go public.
