General News Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Chief Agustin Carstens has acknowledged central banks will likely soon need to issue their own digital currencies, following years of comments and reports heavily criticising cryptocurrencies over. This comes as the IMF and World Bank conducted a survey on financial institutions within all member countries, showing several central banks are considering implementing some form of CBDC. Uruguay has launched a CBDC pilot program already, while the Bahamas, China, Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, Sweden and Ukraine are “on the verge” of testing their systems.
