UK MPs vote resoundingly to extend same-sex marriage and liberalise abortion in Northern Ireland
Tuesday, 9 July 2019 The UK parliament on Tuesday backed amendments that would compel the government to extend same-sex marriage to Northern Ireland and liberalise abortion if the country is unable to re-establish its own devolved government by October 21.
MPs have approved an amendment which aims to extend access to abortion in Northern Ireland by 332 votes to 99, majority 233. Same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland has also taken a step closer after MPs voted to legalise it if a new Stormont Executive is not formed by October.
Philip Hammond said he would resign if Boris Johnson became prime minister. Hammond said he couldn’t support a leader that would do a no-deal Brexit. According to Reuters, his statement echoes others..
