US president Donald Trump’s ambition to appoint a third supreme court justice looked virtually assured on Tuesday, after several Republican senators said they would consider his nominee to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Senator Mitt Romney, one of the few vocal Republican critics of the president, said he intends “to follow the constitution and precedent in considering the president’s nominee”.
