Census may have to wait until next year or even 2022 if Covid-19 situation does not improve

With the home ministry’s notifications outlining September 30, 2020 as end-date for the first phase of Census as well as National Population Register (NPR) updation exercise to be allowed to lapse, indications are emerging that the onset of Census exercise may have to wait until next year or even 2022 if the Covid-19 situation continues to be concern.​

Judge Orders Census To Continue Through October

On Friday, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to continue the Census until October 31. In an early decision, Judge Lucy Koh wrote in no uncertain terms that the Census count had to continue. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the count would end Monday, October 5th. Judge Koh said Ross' directive was an "egregious violation" of her order. She faulted the administration with "chaotic, dilatory, and incomplete compliance with the Injunction Order."
