On May 5, 1994, two days after the Election Commission of India (EC) decided in favour of the DMK after Vaiko’s exit, party patriarch M Karunanidhi wrote to cadre that there had been a danger to the DMK, its headquarters Anna Arivalayam, the bi-coloured flag (and the rising sun symbol). If they had been lost, the ‘Kazhagam siblings’ would have been laying a wreath over him. For a political party and its leader, the symbol is the brand, a lucky charm helping to establish empathy with voters, bringing goodwill and votes.
