Tumblr Is Removed From Apple App Store After Illegal Images Audit

Tumblr Is Removed From Apple App Store After Illegal Images Auditby 👨‍💻 Adam Yardley

Tumblr remains one of the most popular social media and sharing platforms online. Having come to prominence alongside the likes of Facebook and Twitter, it is an image, video and status-sharing service which acts rather like an online scrapbook. However, the platform has apparently come under fire in recent days as a result of a routine audit – where the brand found that a number of illegal pornographic images were allowed to be posted online. As a result, according to BBC News, this could be the trigger point for why the Tumblr app is no longer being supported by the Apple App Store. The brand is currently working to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

The app disappeared for download as of November 16th, though reports suggest the reasons for its removal are only just coming to light. Tumblr advised that they regularly run audits for illegal images and work with a database of ‘known material’ to keep the site safe and legal – however, recently, it appears some images were allowed to slip through the net.

“A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database,” an official statement from Tumblr confirms. “We immediately removed this content. Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We’re continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team.”

Tumblr’s latest updates suggest that they are continuing to look deeply into the problems they are experiencing with the iOS app, while taking ownership of the illegal image issue which appears may have instigated the application disappearing from Apple in recent days. As of the time of writing, no exact resolution has been found – though the brand has continued to assure users that they are working hard to look into ways to bring things back to normal, and back up to legal code.

While Tumblr has acted quickly to address concerns over illegal images being shared on the platform, the brand has come under fire in foreign territories in recent times as a result of adult content finding its way onto the site in general. Both South Korea and Indonesia have spoken out about Tumblr’s adult content filtering in recent times, with the latter having banned access to the service outright for a temporary period.
