Twitter – while once arguably at the forefront of the social media boom – has sadly suffered a dip in user growth in recent years, forcing the little blue bird to reconsider how it is representing itself to the world. It’s also meant that some jobs have had to be taken into consideration, too – and this is all largely thanks to the likes of Instagram and Snapchat making social media and sharing that little bit more personal – and with Facebook continuing to push engagement with its users as far as it possibly can. It seems, however, that Twitter is set to do the unthinkable – that it is going to double the amount of characters that you can use in its famously short micro-statuses.
The feature – which is thought to enable you to use up to double the amount of characters offered (so therefore boosting the limit to 280 from 140) – is said to have been rolled out to certain users of the site on a trial basis. This means that you may well start seeing some users sharing more information than usual – and it is, according to reports, a move that will encourage Tweeters to ‘share more’. Could this be Twitter’s ace in the hole in their latest attempts to fight back against growing social media elsewhere?
While not everyone has access to the double limit just yet, some sites and even media outlets are advising of a way to ‘hack’ your account so that you can make use of character doubling – should you wish to, it’s easy enough to find such information online – but it remains possible that this will be a feature that Twitter will roll out in full to users in due course.
The little blue bird has long since prided itself on its truncated messages, allowing users to use a limited amount of characters to share thoughts, images, links and more – and it has, of course, become to go-to platform for certain political figures and celebrities alike. With double the character limit potentially being rolled out to users worldwide in future, who’s to say what changes it could bring? The biggest question on everyone’s lips right now – of course – what on earth will US President Donald Trump do with double the amount of characters? The answer is – as always – waiting in the wings for avid followers!
