Is there really a general consensus on what we should be eating? It can hardly be denied that a healthy balance between fresh fruit, vegetables, protein and plenty of water can be beneficial for everyone – but with millions of diets out there aiming to capture audiences looking to lose weight, feel great and look fantastic, finding the right advice for your needs and your existing lifestyle can be somewhat tricky to pin down. We all know that too many carbohydrates – and too much sugar – can be bad for us – and one nutritionist in particular is suggesting we should double up on meat rather than plough into the fries should we visit a McDonald’s or Burger King.
Leading registered dietician Emily Field has suggested that switching fries out for a second burger will barely change calorific impact – but it will instead shift focus to your consumption of protein as opposed to additional carbohydrates. Protein is essential for helping us to feel fuller for longer – meaning that a fast food meal could result in you staying full and satiated for hours to come if you introduce more meat. Plumping for additional fries could well just increase your energy levels – and it has been proven time and again that protein can help to reduce the speed at which carbohydrates can be broken down into sugar – meaning that upping your protein and lowering your carb intake could well be the best move you make diet-wise if you’re looking to shift a few pounds.
“I want people to be able to approach any food, any situation, and know that they can still make a responsible choice for their body,” Field advises, in conversation with Business Insider. This means that – even if you do fancy a fast food lunch occasionally – you can still tip the balance in a healthy direction without feeling too guilty. Field also advises that breakfast can be re-tooled to help you feel fuller for longer – as many of us used to eating cereal will often find ourselves spiking on sugar and failing to feel full as the day goes on. Field suggests that introducing high-protein Greek yogurt could help with this – meaning that just a few tweaks to your existing diet could be all you need to make. Don’t always dive into fad or crash diets – take a look at your existing intake and see if you can tune up your nutrition!
