UN envoy praises fresh Libyan nat�l gov�t, advises Security Council to set up truce monitors

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Mar. 24 a United Nations representative praised the formation of a national administration in Libya following years of "paralysis and internal divisions," and advised the Security Council to offer fresh backing by sending UN truce monitors. Jan Kubis said to the Security Council in his first briefing as the special representative of the secretary-general for Libya, and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL): "The House of Representatives on March 10 overwhelmingly endorsed the Government of National Unity (GNU)." He stated that more than 130 members assembled for the session, which "in itself was a historic political milestone," indicating that the new cabinet reflects different regions and constituencies. Oil-rich Libya had descended into many catastrophes after ex leader Muammar Gaddafi fell in 2011, with Libya essentially separated between a UN-acknowledged Government of National Accord located in the capital Tripoli, and a rival government, headed by self-styled Libyan National Army General Khalifa Haftar.
