(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, June 17 (KUNA) -- 1961 -- Kuwait Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah appointed Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah as head of police and public security. Sheikh Saad maintained this position until January 17, 1962, then named Minister of Interior in Kuwait's first government. 1970 -- Sixteen Kuwaiti forces from Yarmouk Brigade martyred when they fight shoulder-to-shoulder with Egyptian armed forces against the Israeli occupaying forces. A battle took place at Suez Canal and a military funeral procession held for the martyrs in Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt, and were burried in Martyrs location at Sulaibikhat cemetery. 1976 -- Five people were injured, including the chief editor, in an explosion at Daily Al-Anbaa newspaper. 1986 -- Four explosions took place at a number of oil facilities at Ahmadi Area causing huge fire in Ahmadi Port and Maqwaa oil fields. No was hurt in the explosions, which were claimed by Arab revolutionaries group. 1990 -- Ahmad Meshari Al-Adwani, a poet who wrote Kuwait national anthem poem, passed away at age of 67. 2000 -- A gas leak in one of the refining towers in Shuaiba Refinery killed two Kuwaiti engineers and injured others. Mohammad Al-Kanderi and Bader Al-Duyouli passed away after inhaling hydrogen sulfide gas when inspecting one of the units. 2000 -- Al-Arabi SC won Kuwait Football Association's (KFA) Martyr Fahad Al-Ahmad League after beating Al-Sahel SC 2-1. 2001 -- Kuwait Blood Bank recognized by the American Association of Blood Banks as the first blood bank in the Middle East. 2001 -- American University in Cairo granted Director of Kuwait University Dr. Fayza Al-Kharafi an honorary doctorate. 2013 -- Abdullah Tergi Al-Resheedi, of Kuwait, won the gold in skeet competition of the world shooting championship in Cyprus. 2019 -- Eman Al-Shamma' won Kuwait Amir shooting championship, held in Italy, and Abdulrahman Al-Faihan won the Trap competition in the same event. 2019 -- Kuwait inaugurated the Late Sheikha Salwa Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Center, the first in the Gulf region. 2020 -- Ahmad Yusuf Behbehani, former vice-chairman of board of Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) and the honorary president of Kuwait Journalists Association, passed away at age of 79. 2020 -- Kuwait National Assembly postponed instalments on citizens for six months. 2020 -- Kuwait parliament amended the civil and commercial law to allow the public to file law suits against judges and prosecutors.
