Microsoft has released its thinnest and lightest tablet to date - and it may turn out to be its most successful

Technology giant Microsoft unveiled its latest tablet on Tuesday. The Surface 3 is the youngest addition to the Surface family of tablets. As an entry-level device, the Surface 3 seeks to build on the success of its larger, more expensive brother, the Surface 3 Pro.

At a starting price of $499, the Surface 3 is set to be much more affordable for the mass market than the Pro model, but it nevertheless packs some punch which may well turn it into the most successful Surface model yet.

Weighing 1.37 pounds it is the lightest model yet. Based on an Intel Atom processor, the Surface ships with full Windows 8.1 - rather than the stripped-down and rather unpopular Windows RT, with an upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released later in the year. The Surface 3 features a 10.8-inch display - the brightest Surface display to date - with a 1920x1280 pixel resolution. With the optional keyboard cover, the Surface 3 turns into a capable replacement for a laptop for many. As such, the Surface 3 doesn't only compete in the tablet market dominated by Apple's iPad but also in the laptop market. Costing considerably less than Apple's entry-level $899 11-inch MacBook Air, the Surface 3 may prove a worthy competitor in that market.

The Surface 3 is currently available for pre-order with devices shipping on May 5th in the United States and Canada, and May 7th internationally.
