While it may not be the best-known smartphone brand in the West, Huawei have taken their time to become a formidable force in handheld hardware out in the East – and it’s a steady progression which this week seems to have allowed them to tip the balance in their rivalry with Apple on a worldwide scale. While the firm, and Apple, have been vying for the top spot as the world’s most prolific smartphone manufacturer alongside Samsung for many years now, it appears that the manufacturer could be ready to put Apple firmly in its place.
While Apple has continued to dominate in many markets on the revenue front due to their market-leading innovations and best-selling iPhone range, it seems that Huawei now has the edge in terms of overall growth. Huawei’s market share appeared to surpass Apple’s for the first time ever back in July this year – as the Palo Alto firm fell from a decline that set in post-holiday season last year. Interest in Apple, however, does appear to be picking up again as news and rumors relating to the upcoming so-called iPhone 8 continue to roll in. What’s telling from the figures, however, is that Samsung were most certainly able to bounce back from a disastrous 2016 – marred by exploding Note 7 devices – as they remain the most popular smartphone manufacturer in the world by a considerable stretch.
In any case, it’s a milestone moment for Huawei – as it means that the firm can now safely say that they sit atop the worldwide markets where they once struggled to make a breakthrough. It’s largely thanks to their budget handsets, widely available in China and the Middle East, having been snapped up by burgeoning populations – in contrast to Apple’s iPhone line, which is still considered something of a luxury by many phone users.
While Apple’s market value may be soaring at an incredible rate – weighing in at $830 billion at last count – their growth appears to have stumbled slightly in comparison with the previous success of the iPhone line. The iPhone 7 could be to blame for this – meaning that Apple will really need to make the iPhone 8 something special if they are to fight back against market leaders Samsung and the plucky underdogs in Huawei – who are going from strength to strength.
