More and more of our everyday devices and items are connecting to and are syncing with the internet – and, of course, everything else around them. It’s an increasingly ‘smart’ world we live in, and with the phenomenon that is the ‘Internet of Things’ allowing household items such as refrigerators to connect to Twitter, it will be a long while before we see the end of a craze which is effectively upgrading everything we know and love to a new technological ideal. Are we heading a bizarre Jetsons-style future? Who knows – but Amazon is one of the few big names on the internet actively leading the push.
Smart glasses have hardly been hugely successful over the years – while Snapchat have released their own frames to allow users to connect their accounts with everyday fields of vision, Google of course pioneered the trend with their ill-fated Google Glass some years ago. It was an innovative and ambitious project which admittedly fell flat due to hardware issues and overall pricing – and while rumors are ticking away to suggest that the big G may not be done with the technology just yet, Amazon are aiming to take on the market themselves, it is thought – and they are of course looking to implement Alexa at the same time.
Alexa is Amazon’s branded virtual assistant, which acts as a voice-controlled advisor through a number of the firm’s popular hardware. It’s rumored that Alexa could make its way into Amazon’s own smart spectacles, which are – of course – yet to be revealed, let alone confirmed. Other rumors suggest that these smart glasses won’t feature a camera at all – and will instead operate as an always-available personal assistant that can be woken up on the move without the user having to operate any devices via hand. For those in need of regular support from their Amazon Echo at home, the allure of Alexa on the go could be very strong indeed.
However, it’s worthwhile taking such comments with a pinch of salt for now. Reputable sources such as the Financial Times are advising that the Amazon specs could be forthcoming, but it is worth waiting for official confirmation from Jeff Bezos or his team before buying any further stock in Amazon. It does worth mentioning, however, that the Amazon Echo remains by far the most popular smart speaker in US homes – meaning that expansion of the service is to be highly likely.
