Has Boris Gone Too Far This Time?

Has Boris Gone Too Far This Time?by πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» Stephanie Boyd

Anyone even remotely following British politics will know already that there are a handful of big characters who are likely better known than others – and while Prime Minister Theresa May has endeavoured to hold onto her place as the country’s leader through what have been very public Brexit discussions and breakdowns aplenty, there is a another name who keeps popping into media headlines. That name is Boris Johnson – who was one of the main politicians responsible for helping to encourage the UK to leave the EU in the first place. Since then, Johnson has been notable for opposing May’s stance on leaving the European Union and for making himself known in his role as Foreign Secretary – which he ceremoniously resigned from in protest against May’s Brexit proposals earlier this year.

However, it’s not all over just yet. Johnson is one of few names who keeps returning to the fore when it comes to discussing May’s successor as Prime Minister – and while he seems to have kept himself away from such debate publicly, it is well-known that he has a strong following in Parliament should a leadership challenge ever be mounted. Johnson famously declined to take the leadership just after the results of the EU referendum rolled in – but will he pick it up post-Brexit?

In a week where it was announced that the MP was to divorce wife Marina Wheeler, and where footage of Johnson watching a cricket match was roundly booed by others in attendance, it seems that the politician was keen to go for a headline hat-trick. He has earned the ire of fellow Conservative politicians for suggesting that May’s strategy for Brexit is akin to putting on a ‘suicide vest’ via article for British press – not least from members of the Cabinet who remain steadfast in backing the Prime Minister. “The Conservative Party is not looking for a new leader because we are lucky to have a very good leader,” advised Home Secretary Sajid Javid. “She is also the Prime Minister of this country and is doing a great job.”

Other MPs and names within Johnson’s own party have been keen to point out that the politician may have gone too far this time – but with a career as varied as Johnson’s arguably has been, will outcry be enough to see him step away from the public soapbox for good? Who’s to say – another day closer to Brexit, and there’s always more drama afoot!
