US President Donald Trump is hardly a stranger to creating news here on Earth, but when it comes to the outer reaches of the cosmos – who’s to say? Anyone who’s been paying attention to Trump’s presidency over the last few months will likely remember the figurehead already having referred to what he’d like to call the US ‘Space Force’ – it was a moment that created a ton of memes and a ton of Twitter jokes, but it seems that Trump himself is particularly serious about making sure that the US take to the stratosphere to claim astro supremacy. In a week where the Trump administration faces criticism over children being separated from their detained parents at the US border, this is another news story which continues to add onto the list of many odd moments that have made up the current President’s tenure thus far.
▶ Trump Launches 'Space Force' as 6th Military Branch
Trump advised that he wishes for the US to have the upper hand when it comes to a ‘Space Force’. “It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space,” he publicly stated. The President hasn’t backed down on his dreams of the US taking to stars, later adding to his statements by insisting that a new force be ordered altogether. “We are going to have the Air Force and we’re going to have the ‘Space Force’ – separate, but equal. It is going to be something.”
▶ Trump Creates Space Force
It’s not the first time that Trump has raised the idea of going military in space, though some corners of the US Air Force aren’t particularly happy with his statements. The Air Force is already responsible for overseeing plenty of space-related equipment, and beyond this, there is a law in place – the 1967 Outer Space Treaty – which the US agrees to. This treaty ensures that there is to be no use of weapons of mass destruction in outer space and that other bodies such as the Moon should be avoided as being used as potential military bases. Quite to what extent Trump wishes to expand his military outfit into the stars remains to be seen, though he won’t be getting anywhere fast without Congressional approval – and it’s safe to say that US politicians aren’t all singing from the same hymn sheet with regard to this concern just yet. Let’s wait and see what happens!
