He came to prominence in the most bizarre way possible – as Donald Trump’s former White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer became the face of the Presidency’s relationship with the media at that time, defending the President to the hilt – regardless of what controversies may have arisen. As 2018 has shown, the mass media is continuing to find moments of controversy in Trump’s administration – it’s unclear quite how Spicer would have handled these moments, but if his prior tenure was anything to go by, he’d have done it with incredible gusto. Spicer became notorious for a number of gaffes and truly odd moments at press screenings – and it’s likely these moments that have kept his name in the spotlight.
While Spicer left the administration in 2017 following the brief hiring of the controversial Anthony Scaramucci to the Trump team, his name is still prevalent – and according to information sourced by the New York Times, he’s heading towards the world of light entertainment, whether you like him or not! The NYT obtained a pitch sheet for a pilot – supposedly due to film in July – where Spicer would be entertaining guests as part of his own chat show on a network which is yet to be sought. This is not rumor – as the man himself has confirmed that he’ll be filming a pilot for TV very soon.
“I think it’s important to have a platform where we can have civil, respectful, and informative discussions on the issues of the day,” Spicer advised the NYT. It’s thought that a chat show pilot will see the former Trump spokesman hosting famous or ‘interesting’ guests in a ‘relaxed atmosphere’ – and it’s being backed by the likes of the Pilgrim Media Group and Debmar-Mercury, both of whom have stakes in major network TV properties and have done so for years. Can they smell a hit on their hands?
▶ Sean Spicer to Get Talk Show?
It’s not the first time that Spicer has been front and center on TV – aside from his famous press screenings, he’s been lampooned mercilessly on Saturday Night Live, and even willingly poked fun at himself at the Emmys in 2017. Will this mean a talk show featuring the polarizing figure is necessarily a hit? He has continued to host his own podcast and is reportedly a member of America First Action, a Trump-supporting PAC – so to say he’s been inactive since his departure from the White House is complete fabrication!
