‘Game of Thrones’ Star Isaac Hempstead Wright Reveals How He Nailed Bran’s Creepy Stare (Video)

The Wrap Thursday, 18 April 2019
(Warning: This post contains small spoilers for the “Game of Thrones” Season 8 premiere)

Bran Stark a.k.a. the Three-Eyed Raven spent the better part of Sunday’s “Game of Thrones” eighth and final season premiere just sitting in the Winterfell courtyard staring off in the distance. At the end of the episode, we found out he’s been waiting for Jaime Lannister — the man who shoved him out the window and crippled him as a boy — to arrive.

And then the episode ends with (spoiler alert) a stare down between Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster Waldau).

Now at this point it seems most of Wright’s “GoT” performance is this creepy gaze, and on Wednesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the actor revealed how he nailed the facial expression.

“Yeah, I’m kind of getting good at this sort of intense stare,” Wright told Jimmy Kimmel. “But it’s actually aided by the fact that I’m completely blind when I’m on set. I don’t have my glasses and I don’t have contact lenses.”

And Wright says he definitely needs his glasses to see.

“I can just remember, I was doing one scene in Season 7 with Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa, and she said, ‘Isaac, your stare, it’s like you’re staring into my soul’ and I said, ‘I can’t see you! That’s why,'” he said.

Oh, if you were looking for him to talk about that whole Bran-is-the-Night-King theory, he “can neither confirm, nor deny,” obviously.

The final season of “Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
