Fukushima Cleanup Estimated Cost Hits $178B, Way Above Initial Numbers

The estimated cost of cleanup at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, damaged in an earthquake in 2011, is now $178 billion, triple the amount initially estimated by the government and nearly double their most recent revised estimate.

Japan's trade ministry has almost doubled the estimated cost of compensation for the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster and decommissioning of the damaged Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant to more than 20 trillion yen ($177.51 billion), according to the Nikkei business daily. Ryan Brooks reports.
