Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels: Lawyer Seeks to Invoke the Fifthby

The ongoing and evolving saga that is Donald Trump’s presidency continues – and while the President continues to court supporters and critics alike, it seems that there isn’t a week that goes by without there being a new sting in the tail. Recently, one of the biggest bombshells to hit the press has revolved around Trump’s attorney – Michael Cohen – though the President has recently claimed that Cohen is only one of ‘many, many attorneys’ working for him – and that he has ‘nothing to do with (Cohen’s) business’. Trump distancing himself from the case is hardly the media-grabbing moment this week, however.

Cohen is currently facing a civil case set up by adult actress Stormy Daniels, who has claimed publicly – and thus reportedly breaking a non-disclosure agreement – that she received hush money to remain quiet on a supposed sexual relationship that she had with Trump in 2006. Daniels has also since claimed that she was threatened by someone she believes to be a member of Trump’s representation into keeping quiet – but now, however, she has chosen to go public on such matters – and is pursuing Trump attorney Michael Cohen for an end to a non-disclosure deal.

Cohen’s response has been revealed thus far – this week, it emerged that he has chosen to invoke the Fifth Amendment and has used his constitutional right to remain silent. Cohen’s own lawyers have requested for a pause on the case – which comes in the middle of the FBI’s continued investigation into affairs surrounding Trump’s election into the White House, and after Cohen’s offices were raided for information. Trump responded angrily to these moves – and, if his recent appearance with Fox News was anything to go by, he seems to be trying to distance himself from Cohen and Daniels altogether.

Trump recently denied knowledge, captured on video, that Daniels had been paid at all to be kept quiet – advising reporters that they would have to discuss such matters with Mr Cohen. Since then, the Daniels/Cohen/Trump saga has only blossomed – though quite where any of it will all lead remains to be seen. Against a backdrop of Trump’s ongoing Russian collusion woes, it seems that The Donald’s second year as leader of the free world could be set to be just as dramatic as the first – if not more so – regardless of who says what and to whom!
