The British press have this week waxed lyrical about little other than the birth of Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, having welcomed their third child, a boy (as yet unnamed at the time of writing). The couple’s impending parenthood for a third time has been covered extensively in the media, and, as such, both William and Kate made an appearance with their newborn son just seven hours after he arrived – and for many people on social media and beyond, it’s Kate’s appearance that has raised concerns from both sides.
Kate’s appearance in designer clothing and looking ready as ever for the cameras did not sit well with many mothers online, who felt that her appearance just hours after giving birth depicted an unrealistic and harmful image – which led to many mothers sharing photos of themselves after the same time frame. The point driven home here by said mothers is that, on the whole, we don’t look quite like the Duchess of Cambridge after hours of labor – and some stated that they felt pressured by her appearance, concerned that it could instil an unreasonable expectation for women everywhere.

Others, however, have been quick to defend the royal, advising that a photo opportunity after the birth of her third son was what she had expected to do – and that, as a result, this is what the media expected from the royal family – however, at the same time, it isn’t difficult to see why her media-friendly presence after such a short time has rubbed people up the wrong way. Many people on the other side of the debate state invariably that the Duchess was simply ‘doing her job’ – though the news did seem to start a movement whereby mothers shared their own, occasionally unflattering, yet more realistic photos of what they looked like after giving birth.

It’s set to be a busy year for the British royals, with William’s brother Harry set to marry Meghan Markle this May – with a whirlwind couple of years having faced the British press and public since Brexit went down, it’s hardly surprising that so many people are getting excited!
