We’re approaching the end of June now and regardless of what the season may be, we always set aside time to take a look back at some of the most interesting, controversial and/or important moments that took place over years, decades and centuries gone by. Without further ado, here’s our pick of the week in historical events!

June 18th 1583 – The World’s First Life Insurance Policy
Making sure you’re well-covered by a financial sum or two isn’t completely out of the question nowadays – but back in the 16th century, it was a whole new kettle of fish! William Gibbons was the first person ever to take out life insurance to the tune of £383.

June 19th, 1978 – ‘Garfield’ Debuts
The unmistakable fat orange cat – everyone’s aware of Garfield, and cartoonist Jim Davis first brought his wit and insatiable appetite to the masses in his first comic strip back in 1978 – today marks the cat’s landmark 40thbirthday!
Famous Birthday: Paula Abdul (Singer), 55

June 20th, 1895 – The Telegraph is Patented
While receiving a telegram may seem a little outdated today, Samuel Morse’s telegraph is still one of the most important communications devices ever devised – and it celebrates its 123rd anniversary of having been patented this very week.
Famous Birthday: John Goodman (Actor), 65

June 21st, 1788 – The US Constitution Becomes Official
Anyone who has been following our trips through time will already know that June is a very important month indeed for a variety of America-related reasons – and we’re continuing with the US today with the Constitution having been officially ratified by the state of New Hampshire – bringing the document into effect.

June 22nd, 1939 – Princess Elizabeth Meets Prince Philip
They’re the reigning British monarchs and have been for decades – but on this day, back in 1939, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of Greece met for the first time.

June 23rd, 2016 – The Brexit Referendum
It’s proving to be one of the most important moments in modern UK history – and the moment the UK public voted to decide to leave the European Union can be traced back two years this June.

June 24th, 1901 – Picasso Premieres a Painting
One of the most unique artists of his time, Pablo Picasso put on his first exhibition at the age of just 19 in Paris, France, 117 years ago this week.
Famous Birthday: Lionel Messi (Footballer / Soccer Star), 30

June 25th, 1630 – The Americans Discover Forks!
How did we ever cope without a fork to go with our knives and spoons? Governor Winthrop is reportedly responsible for bringing the humble dining fork to American tables back in the 17th century.
