This Week in History: September 10th - September 16thby

While we may all be readily focused on the here and now, it’s always important to take a close look back at where we’ve all come from – and each week, we make sure to glance at some of history’s defining moments from our current seven days. Who’s to say what has happened in centuries past this week? Let’s jump in our time machine and take a look at September 10th to 16th in history.

September 10th, 1977 – The Guillotine Takes its Last Drop
Yes – believe it or not, France stopped using the guillotine for execution relatively recently, with convicted murderer Hamida Djandoubi being the last felon to take the blade.
Famous Birthday: Colin Firth (Actor), 58

September 11th, 2001 – The World Trade Center Attacks
September 11th is, and always will be, marked as the date of when the US faced its biggest terrorist attacks on home soil. 2,752 people lost their lives in the attacks, in which two passenger planes were flown directly into New York’s famous twin towers.
Famous Birthday: Moby (Musician), 53

September 12th, 1940 – The Lascaux Cave Paintings Discovered
Quite what four teenagers and their dogs expected to find down a trek through a hole in France remains to be said – but what was unveiled that day transpired to be cave paintings of around 17,000 years old. To this day, they’re known as the Lascaux Cave Paintings – and they’re a huge link to our ancient past.
Famous Birthday: Jennifer Hudson (Singer/Actor), 37

September 13th, 1969 – Scooby-Doo Debuts
It’s one of the most enduring cartoon franchises of all time, and it helped to cement Hanna-Barbera as a worldwide force in TV animation. Scooby-Doo, Shaggy and the rest of the Mystery Machine gang celebrate almost 50 years in the crime-busting business this week!

September 14th, 1868 – The First Hole in One
Yes – records show that Tom Morris is responsible for the first-ever hole in one in golf put to note – it’s still not an easy feat to this day, even on a par 3 hole! Only the especially talented – of course – ever manage to get a perfect swing off the tee.

September 15th, 1998 – Google.com is Born
