This Week in History: October 8th - October 14thby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

October is well on the way now – and as our recent trips into the past will have told you, there’s always something interesting happening from day to day and from month to month. Who’s to say whether or not we’ll be looking back on today with future trips? For now, at least, let’s take a look at what happened this week in history – going back years, decades and even centuries!

October 8th, 1927 – Their First Fine Mess!
Laurel and Hardy are well-known for being perhaps the most iconic comedy double act of all time, at least on the big screen – and on this day back in 1927, they debuted together in their first silent picture – ‘The Second Hundred Years’.
Famous Birthday: Bruno Mars (Singer), 33

October 9th, 2006 – North Korea Begin Nuclear Tests
It was the first movement made by North Korea to put the cat truly among the pigeons – with the reclusive state reportedly putting around 0.4 to 2 kilotons to nuclear test. Since then, Kim Jong-Un has asserted that testing will cease – but many are sceptical.
Famous Birthday: John Lennon (Beatles Legend), 1940 - 1980

October 10th, 1965 – The First Known Map of America Uncovered
The ‘Vinland Map’ – dating back to what is presumed to be around 1440 – was unveiled by Yale University today as what is assumed to be the earliest drawn map of America on record.
Famous Birthday: Giuseppe Verdi (Composer), 1813 - 1901

October 11th, 1975 – ‘Saturday Night Live’ Begins
Saturday Night Live – or SNL – remains one of the world’s longest-running TV variety shows, and it debuted on this day back in 1975 on NBC. The first host was George Carlin – and it’s been going strong ever since.
Famous Birthday: Luke Perry (Actor), 52

October 12th, 1609 – ‘Three Blind Mice’ Published
Nursery rhymes are both odd and ancient in equal measure – and one of our longest-lasting standards, ‘Three Blind Mice’, was published on this day back in 1609 in London.
Famous Birthday: Hugh Jackman (Actor), 50

October 13th, 2016 – Bob Dylan Wins a Nobel Prize
There was some tussle over this back in the day – but legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan would win his first-ever Nobel Prize – in literature – and while many may have felt he deserved it, this remained a controversial decision.
Famous Birthday: Sacha Baron Cohen (Actor / Comedian), 47

October 14th, 1066 – The Battle of Hastings
It’s the one historical date everyone remembers! The Battle of Hastings in 1066 saw William the Conqueror of Normandy defeat Harold I and his English forces in an event which is still recalled with ease to this day.
Famous Birthday: Usher (Singer), 40
