This Week in History: January 1st - January 7thby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Happy New Year – let’s make 2018 a good one! It’s safe to say that it will be another twelve months of historical mayhem – who knows what lies ahead? Maybe we’ll be taking plenty of trips back to 2018 in our ONP Time Machine in the years to come – but for now, at least, let’s delve back into the past and get ourselves educated on some of time’s most interesting lessons.

January 1st, 1896: The X-Ray Discovered
A pioneering moment in medical history and a fantastic start to 1896 – as Wilhelm Rontgen first announces that he has discovered x-ray technology. This would, of course, shape the way that we would diagnose and treat bone breakages and organ problems for decades to come.

January 2nd, 1906: First Patent for Air Conditioning Received
Believe it or not, that noisy yet efficient AC unit that keeps you cool in the summer months has only been a part of our technological landscape for just over a century – and it’s only become more sophisticated (though perhaps only a little quieter) over the years!

January 3rd, 1987: Aretha Franklin Makes Rock & Roll Hall of Fame History
Legendary soul star Aretha Franklin would become the first female artist to ever be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 31 years ago this week – and she’s opened the doors for incredible female talent ever since.

January 4th, 1865: The New York Stock Exchange Finds a Home
Just off Wall Street in NYC – that’s where the world-famous New York Stock Exchange would find its first permanent headquartered address, and since then, it’s inarguably become the trading capital of the world – amid success and disaster alike.

January 5th, 1945: Pepe Le Pew Debuts
He’s one of the Looney Tunes’ most recognizable characters – and perhaps one of the most controversial – regardless, the odorous and amorous skunk made his debut for Warner Bros in ‘Odor-able Kitty’ back in 1945.

January 6th, 1681: The First Boxing Match on Record
Yes – boxing really is that old – as it’s thought a match between the butcher and butler of the Duke of Albemarle was the first bout on record. Gone are the days of putting horseshoes in your gloves, though – we can hope, anyway!

January 7th, 1930: The Last Natural Element Discovered
Incredibly, it’s been 88 years since the last naturally-occurring element was discovered – and Francium, or Fr in the periodic table, holds that distinction – thanks to Marguerite Perey.

Get those resolutions written and the last of those yuletide goodies eaten – but don’t take the return to work too hard! Stay tuned for more time travelling soon!
