In roanoke-a tractor trailer fire is causing delays on part of route 220.the truck fired started this afternoon--on route 220 north ---near the home depot at mile marker 59.

That part of the road is still shut down tonight- and traffic is being detoured through the home depot parking lot.people in nearby businesses snapped pictures of the fire as it unfolded outside.wfxrs kristen eskow is live in roanoke near the fire- and kristen- when do officials think the highway could open?

Becky and travell - hazmat crews are continuing to get this highway cleaned up several hours after the fire started this afternoon.

The highway remains closed - and local businesses i spoke with say they have taken a hit today as a result.

The slow roll continues on route 220 north as hazmat crews work on getting the highway cleaned up.

Local businesses we spoke with say they have noticed a difference in their shops today."we usually stay pretty steady, steadily busy.

And so today is, we've kind of had a more hit or miss clientele come in."

Melissa godsey works at fleet feet sports - which is located right across the street from where the fire happened."we heard a bang, but we thought it was something in a back room.

The next thing you knew, we could see smoke coming around the building.

It was pretty thick smoke.""i live in rocky mount.

So i went home to run an errand, and it took me basically about an hour and a half as soon as i got to the walmart to get just, i'd say, two miles up the road."juan alvarez says business has also been slower at his restaurant - el rio mexican grill - located on the northbound side of route 220 just south of the accident.

He says he believes fewer people have been driving through this area of town due to the traffic."it's been slow today.

I mean, usually on wednesdays, we do pretty good.

We have a big sale on burritos and stuff and we're pretty packed."as the cleanup continues - some people who work in the area say they're planning alternate routes home.

"we've come up with a plan.

We going to hit south peak and go up over the mountain here and hit the other side, so i don't think we will be affected too bad."

And as the cleanup continues - route 220 remains closed on the northbound side until the area has been cleared.
