Outpouring of support for Roseland police chief

New at 5... roseland's police chief is in the hospital right now -- after a serious accident.

We first told you about the crash yesterday.

Wsbt 22's zach crenshaw is live outside memorial hospital.

Zach, what's the latest chief aaron catanzarite?

Fortunately his legs are not broken as originally feared..

But fellow police officers tell me he was preparing to go into surgery just an hour or two ago.

The main concern having to do with his left eye..

Which hit the spotlight handle in his police car when he crashed.

Now, the chief who has been there for so many during their toughest moments..

Is the one on the receiving end..

Of an outpouring of support.

For robin ackerson..

The roseland town and police building..

Doesn't feel the same.

Robin ackerson, roseland clerk treasurer 48:30 the council president called me at home yesterday morning, and let me know that aaron had been involved in an accident.

Roseland police chief aaron catanzarite..

Was seriously injured while taking his daughter to school.

Ackerson 52:26 he had an injury to his eye.

And that is going to be a long, painful process to cope with.

Zach crenshaw stu 30 38:23 you can still see the damage on these stones where chief catanzarite crashed.

The investigation is still ongoing.

But friends who have talked with the chief say he intentionally swerved, not only to avoid the other car but to take most of the impact, to protect his daughter who is in the front seat :39 52:02 that's aaron, absolutely that's aaron.

He would give his life for anyone.

Now..

Others are supporting chief catanzarite in his time of need.

From fellow roseland employees like mike schlak..

Mike schlak, roseland maintenance manager 01:17 just wanted to let him know that i'm there if they need anything.

To fellow officers in the area..

Lt gene eyster, sbpd 00:52 you do the same things, you share the same risk, you're there to support each other.

Ackerson 50:00 there were probably four or five officers that came while i was there, and i understand that several officers had been in and out throughout the day :09 01:48 it's a good distraction.

Everyone who wears a uniform knows the grief and suffering that people go through.

We see it every day.

There is uncertainty surrounding the vision in catanzarite's left eye..

But his community and fellow officers want him to see they are there for him.

Schlak 01:52 i think with all this positive support he is getting from everybody, that he is a strong man, he's going to make it through this :03 everyone else in the crash has been released.

Lt.

Eyster told me he's hopeful chief catanzarite will be out of memorial behind me..

By sunday.

While he is out of the office and off duty, roseland is down one of their 3 police officers.

I'm told other departments are stepping up, patrolling the area and working to help in his absence.
