Along highway one- 51, also known as graefenburg road, are being heard.
After countless crashes along the four to five mile strecth of highway.... the kentucky transportation cabinet has enacted a temporary ban for oversize trucks.
As abc 36's diane gerstenfeld explains... it's a win for those along that highway..., but there's more fight to be had in court.
--nat sound--car going by tom isaac's front yard looks like a wreck "i don't like it, it's not very pretty."
That's because a truck blew through his fence two and a half months ago....but that's not the first time something like this has happened... --nat sound--truck going by "probably a dozen since we've been here."
You can still see the tire marks where a tanker truck carrying grain alcohol tore threw the other side of the fence last october.
He says every year there are about 29 accidents on this two lane road "if they vear off just a little bit they're in trouble."
Though isaac may not like it, he's leaving the tire marks there to make a point...he and more than two hundred other people, known as the one-51 group, are fed up with trucks using graefenburg road as a short cut.
"big deal, five miles to drive around."
The petitoners slapped the kentucky transportation cabinet with a lawsuit last monday to ban all commercial trucks.
After almost thirty years fighting this....under a new adimistration the state agreed....well sort of "what it did is stopped the oversize trucks but we have a safety issue here it's not about the truck.
It's about a five miles of road that has travel lanes that are foot too narrow going in both directions, and no shoulder."
The partial ban covers trucks atleast 53 feet long or 8 and a half feet wide temporarily until the two parties can work things out in court.
We're convinced, "i'm convinced in my heart we're going to come to an agreement."
Besides the commercial truck ban, they're also asking for a weight and safety survey to be done "this road has never been safety tested.
It was designed in 1926 and nothing's been done in this 5 mile stretch, nothing's been done except a fresh coat of blacktop."
Diane gerstenfeld abc 36 news.
According to the kentucky transportation cabinet eight hundred commercial vehicles travel along highway one- 51 a day.
From 20-12 to 20-14 there were 88 accidents on that road.
