Psychiatrist criticizes restraint, seclusion at Montana Stat

Used at the montana state hospital dehumanizing... traumatic and outdated.

He was speaking as a witness for a lawsuit against the hospital filed by four psychiatric patients.

The patients acuse hospital staff of abuse... forced isolation.... and failed treatment.

Restraint and seclusion... two practices under fire tuesday at the county courthouse in helena.

You're looking at pictures provided to nbc montana by disability rights montana.

The group says they show the seclusion rooms where two of the patents suing the hospital are kept 23 hours a day... one of them... for the past four years.

Court documents describe instances at the hospital where patients have been forcefully restrained and secluded.

Butz expert witness who testified tuesday... said the practices make the patent's conditions worse..

Not better.

"people could be horribly traumatized, brain washing happens that way.

There's a whole variety of negative outcomes that go with that are well studied and well researched and are pretty much common knowledge in the clinical community."

From the witness staff have defended their use of restraint and seclusion.

They say it's only used in emergency situations... to protect themselves and the patients when they have no other options.

They say the patients kept in seclusion suffer from such severe mental illness that they can be dangerous.

The purpose of this week's hearings is to decide whether the hospital should be forced to release the two patients from seclusion while this lawsuit proceeds.

The judge has yet to issue a ruling.
