Vigo County Schools Walkout

students across the nation are taking a stance for safety... and gun reform. they were also honoring the lives of students killed at a school shooting in parkland, florida. as we first told you last night... students here in the wabash valley were focusing on today's walkout. news 10's abby kirk shows us why some of those studies felt today was an opportunity for change. "walked out" the doors of terre haute north vigo high school.... nat "this can't keep happening." "my heart was broken it was all a part of what is called the "walkout".... a nationwide "peaceful protest" that allowed participants to walk out of school to raise awareness of gun violence and school safety.... nat "this is more of a political issue." sloan pollom... hannah cervantes.... and ellie hampton are the three students we introduced to you... tuesday.... after the school corporation denied a "walkout"....the girls sent a letter asking school leaders to reconsider... nat "yes...we are very happy about the turnout." "wednesday"... they stood with more than 100 students by their sides...

"protesting peacefully".... ...instead of participating in an assembly that was offered by the school ....and held in the gymnasium....

"we respect the rights of our students and their first amendment. but, we can't allow truancy...and allow kids to walk out because today was a very important day... but where do you stop that in the future." superintendent, danny tanoos, says he came to a compromise with the girls... respecting their rights... ...while also making sure they didn't cause a disruption to the assembly....

"activism has no age ...and we are making a difference." the school provided a designated area...with safety measures...wher e students stood in silence for "17" minutes...

"1" minut for each of the "17" victims killed at marjory stoneman douglas high school in february.

"when you see people standing with 17 posters..it really hits home...with how many people were harmed by this." students held hand-made posters ... 17 of them...had the names of the victims ... ...spreading awareness ..

"i think the first step is getting the youth aware about politics and letting them know that they can vote at 17." and--- not letting "age" stop these students...from having their voices heard... in terre haute, abby kirk, news 10. superintendent, danny tannoos says students who walked out of class will recieve a "two" hour detention. but, he says he supports them speaking up... people across town also participated
